Dr. Amirhossein Takian, head of the department of global health and public policy, and deputy dean for international affairs, stated that the school of public health has ever aimed to present the highest quality educational services and propagate innovative and effective research programs, in line with national and international needs, and in line with the sustainable development goals. For maximum effectiveness, these efforts need to take place in association with policy making and analysis of the health system.
To this aim, the holding of educational programs related to public health, helps to train specialized personnel familiar with the different fields of public health, and creates a practical solution to help promote the health of the general population.
Dr. Amirhossein Takian, Secretary of the Steering Committee of this event, also said: The School of Public Health, has up till now successfully hosted this summer school four times, and has also had a successful experience holding a similar event- The IPHS Winter Camp- with the aim of familiarizing students of medicine and medical sciences with the various fields of public health and what they entail. With this resume in tow, this educational event was introduced to the 18th National Medical Education Congress. The IRAN International Public Health Summer School, after being selected as the best educational process at the university level, went on to gain third place in the field of Learning and Teaching Methods.
According to Ali Ganjizade, executive director of the 4th IPHS, new and innovative educational methods have been used to increase participants’ interest in fields related to public health. These methods include use of a story based scenario, simulation, gamification and game-based learning to enhance the participants’ educational experience. The school’s physical environment has even been designed in such a way as to enable participants to carry out the tasks of a health specialist on a smaller scale, and to become familiar with decision making in the health system.
This educational program, with an international audience in mind, is held in English, and has managed to attract students from across the globe, such as the Americas, Europe, and Eastern Asia. This school is held in two parts, an initial online course, and an on campus course. The online course comprises 6 weeks of online education, which aims to teach basic information on social determinants of health, advocacy, epidemiology, environmental health, policy making and global health. Afterwards, the on campus course, held in the National Museum of Medical History, uses innovative educational methods such as a story based scenario, simulation, gamification and learner based education. The online course uses creative methods such as video clips, interactive lessons and vide whiteboards to transfer information. Dr Seyed Reza Majdzadeh, and Dr Amirhossei Takian, members of the SPH faculty, are members of the steering committee of the 4th and 5th IPHS.
